I built a cyber security home lab! I’ve been wanting to move beyond theory and really get my hands dirty with offensive and defensive tooling, so I carved out time to build a fully virtual lab for both offensive and defensive security. This setup lets me simulate attacks, detect them, respond to them, and then remediate any vulnerabilities. Not only is it helping with improving my offensive and defensive security skills, but also been reinforcing what I’ve been learning in #MSSA, especially around Windows Server Administration, Active Directory, Group Policy, and how to harden enterprise Windows environments. Inside the lab: - A Kali Linux virtual machine - Windows Server 2019 as my Domain Controller - A Windows 10 domain-joined workstation - Splunk as my SIEM solution - Security Onion from Security Onion Solutions, LLC as my IDS, Security Monitoring, and Log Management solution - A pfSense firewall for network segmentation and traffic control - All provisioned locally using VMware Workstation Pro It’s helping me build muscle memory and confidence using tools that real-world teams rely on. Now with all of this, I have to give credit where it is due! A huge thank you to Day Johnson from CYBERWOX and Cyberwox Academy for providing in-depth step-by-step tutorials on how to stand this up. And also a huge thank you to Tadi, as your journey has been a huge inspiration for me! Your Purple Team Home Lab video series really motivated me to pursue this.
